What Is Osgood-Schlatter Disease, and How Can Knee Braces for Kids Help?
Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) is the inflammation of the bone, cartilage, and/or tendon at the top of the tibia or shinbone, where the tendon from the patella or kneecap attaches. Usually, only one knee is affected. This disease is one of the most common causes of knee pain in active adolescents and young athletes, especially around the beginning of their growth spurts that occur around the time of the two-year period in which they grow the fastest. Growth spurts can occur at any time between the ages of eight and thirteen for girls or between ten and fifteen for boys.
The good news is that OSD isn't that serious and is actually an overuse injury. However, teens increase their risk for OSD through playing sports involving running, jumping, and twisting, such as football, volleyball, basketball, tennis, soccer, gymnastics, etc. While physicians often disagree about the causes of OSD, they are usually in agreement that overuse and physical stress are involved.
Symptoms of OSD may include the following: pain that worsens with exercise, relief from pain with rest, swelling or tenderness under the knee and over the shinbone, limping after exercise, and tightness of the muscles surrounding the knee (hamstring and quadriceps).
One of the few knee braces for kids in the market today that specifically addresses Osgood-Schlatter for children is our knee band. It has an anatomically contoured knit with silicone pad that helps relieve pressure at the base of the patellar tendon and focuses on localized pressure relief for tibial tuberosity, used to support therapy for Osgood-Schlatter disease.
